Paul Waugh Labour and Co-operative MP for Rochdale

Rochdale MP Paul Waugh has paid tribute in Parliament to local football star Keira Walsh, ahead of the Lionesses’ defence of their European Championship title this summer.
Speaking in the House of Commons last week, Mr Waugh said he was “delighted” that Rochdale’s own Keira Walsh would again be “wearing the number four shirt at the heart of our midfield” for England, calling her “an inspiring figure for women and girls across the country.”
He also gave special thanks to Keira’s parents, Tracy and Peter Walsh, recognising their years of dedication and support. “Her proud mum and dad… did so much in producing such an inspiring figure,” he said, adding his best wishes to the whole England squad.
Leader of the House of Commons, Lucy Powell MP, joined in the tribute, telling MPs: “What joy that brought to all of us on winning the Euros four years ago. I absolutely join him in thanking Tracy and Peter… and all the time and energy that goes into creating someone as brilliant as Keira Walsh.”
Just days later, the Lionesses delivered a dominant 7–0 victory over Jamaica in their final warm-up match before the tournament, with Walsh once again playing a central role in midfield. The emphatic win sends England into the Euros full of confidence, as they prepare to begin their title defence in Switzerland.
Keira Walsh, who grew up in Rochdale and played her early football at local grassroots clubs, was a key part of the England squad that won the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 and is recognised as one of the world’s top midfielders.
A huge mural of Keira in her England kit adorns the Inavate Centre in the heart of Rochdale.
Mr Waugh said:
“This is a moment of real local pride. Keira is not just a world-class footballer, she’s a role model to young people in Rochdale and across the country. We’ll all be cheering her and the Lionesses on as they aim to defend their title.”
